How Often Should You Get Your House Cleaned?

Liam and Andrew · Clean N Co Services

Weekly, fortnightly or monthly? It depends on who lives there, how big the home is and how hard it gets lived in. Here's how we'd decide.

After price, it's the question we get asked most: how often should I actually get my house cleaned? The honest answer is that it depends on who lives there, how big the home is, and how hard it gets lived in. Here's how we'd work it out.

The quick guide

  • Weekly: the best option for keeping on top of mould and build-up, especially in bathrooms and showers. Ideal for families, pets, larger homes and anyone working long hours.
  • Fortnightly: the sweet spot for most households. Great for busy couples, people living alone or flat out with work, empty nesters and smaller homes.
  • Monthly: the deeper clean option. It still keeps on top of everything, but with more time between visits there's more build-up to get through, so each visit takes longer and is priced higher. Best for lightly used homes, or if you're happy to do more of the upkeep yourself.
The more often we come, the less each visit costs. A home cleaned weekly never gets far from clean, so every visit is quicker. It's the one time maths is on your side.

How much do you want to do in between?

Most people keep things ticking over between visits: the dishes, a wipe of the benches, the odd vacuum. We'd never suggest leaving the place for us to dig out of. The real question is how much of the rest you'd like to keep doing yourself.

  • Weekly: you keep it tidy, we take care of the bathrooms, floors and kitchen before anything builds up.
  • Fortnightly: you'll do a little more in the in-between week, mostly keeping surfaces wiped down and the floors vacuumed and mopped. (A robot vacuum helps, even though they're our sworn enemy 🥲)
  • Monthly: you handle more of the regular upkeep, and each visit is a deeper clean that gets through the month's build-up.

If you're spending more of your weekend cleaning than you'd like, that's usually the sign to have us come more often. (That, and the shower screen starting to look like frosted glass.)

Larger homes are different

A five bedroom, four bathroom home isn't a big apartment. There are more surfaces, more floors, more glass and more people living in it, and a cleaner who plans for an apartment will run out of time somewhere around the third bathroom.

For four and five bedroom homes, we'll usually send two cleaners. The visit wraps up sooner, you get your home back quicker, and the last room gets the same attention as the first rather than whatever energy is left at the end of a long solo clean.

For families in larger homes, we'd nearly always recommend weekly. Kitchens, bathrooms and floors in a busy house drift a long way in fourteen days.

Start with a reset

Whatever you choose, every new home starts with an initial clean. It's longer and more thorough than a regular visit, because it brings the whole home up to our standard: the build-up on shower screens, the tops of door frames, and the inside of the microwave nobody has been brave enough to look at in a while. After that, regular visits keep it there.

Not sure which to pick? Choose your best guess on the quote and we'll talk it through with you before anything's booked. For anything over four bedrooms, book an in-person consultation and we'll walk through the home with you.
